About

Last updated Oct 2, 2026

Idle & Awake Blog answers the everyday questions people actually type into a search box — about business, tech, science, travel, food, history and work — in plain English, with sources you can check.

Why we started

Search for a simple question and you often get a page that circles the answer for a thousand words, or one that sounds sure of itself without saying where the facts came from. We wanted the opposite: the short answer first, then the reasoning, a table or graphic when numbers are involved, and a list of sources at the end.

Who we are

Idle & Awake Blog is written and edited by the Idle & Awake team — the same small, independent team behind Idle & Awake Essays, Tools and Time. Where a free tool helps you work the answer out for yourself, we link to it.

How answers are made

  • A real question first. Every post starts from a question people actually ask — not from a keyword list.
  • The short answer up front. Each post opens with a Quick answer, then explains it.
  • Sources first. Every post lists at least two sources, preferring primary ones — official statistics, laws and regulations, standards bodies, original studies, manufacturers’ documentation.
  • Every number checked. Numbers, dates and rules must match a listed source. When we calculate something ourselves, we say how.
  • Dated. Rules, prices and schedules change, so posts that depend on them show the date the facts were checked.
  • Automated checks. Before anything is published it passes checks for sources, structure, banned claims and duplication.

What we don’t do

We don’t give financial, legal or medical advice. We don’t write about politics, religion or breaking news, and we don’t write gossip about real people.

Money and independence

The site is supported by display advertising (Google AdSense) and Amazon affiliate links in a short From the shelf list that fits each topic. Advertisers never see posts before publication, and affiliate links never change what we write. See our affiliate disclosure.

Readers can also support the site directly on Buy Me a Coffee. It’s optional, supporters get no say over what we publish, and every answer stays free to read.
